Aspects of Music Videos

In our Media lesson we have learning about the different conventions of music videos, and we have identified that music videos have at least one of the following aspects:

Controversial - This means there is a discussion or dispute on something. This could be a video like telephone (A discussed video in this blog). This was discussed because there are many different undertones to the video, some sexual and some violent.

Sexy - The sign of a sexy music video is when there is fragmentation of the body. Body fragmentation is when you see different parts of body parts in many different shots, these can be close ups or just people dancing in the back ground in bikinis. Dizzy Rascal- holiday..

Party orientated - This is when the main idea of the music video is a sense of a party and people enjoying the environment. This is usual used for upbeat songs like “Cooler than me- Mike Posner”. The atmosphere is created so the audience would also like to get up and have a dance.

Narrative - This is when the music video tells a story. The video usually relates to the lyrics in the song. An example of this could be “Belong with Me- Taylor swift”. This isn’t the whole story however there are enough shots and cinematography to help you understand the story.

Fantasy - This is also a mythical and mysterious music video. An example of this could be “Robbie Williams- You know me”. This reminds the audience that everyone daydreams and feel like they are in their own world.

However, in order to be shown on MTV, it will have to be:
               Between 3-5 minutes long
Popular – Viewers continue to watch it
               Many straight and quick cuts
Edited to the tempo/beat of the music
