Editing Techniques For Videos

When editing music videos it is important that they make sense and that the editing is appropriate to what is going on in the video. E.g. lots of fast editing and moving through the shots wouldnt be appropriate if it was quite a slow song.

One technique that is useful and can be very effective is split screen.

This image to the left is a still taken from Example's music video for the song Kickstarts. This split screen has many different areas and there was a gradual build up to this point. This means that the audience are always interested in what is going on because it is constantly changes. They do not get bored of the video.

Another technique that can be used when editing music videos is the transitions that are used. Some examples of these would be dissolve which dissolves the shot into the next. Cross fade which would make the first shot appear to fade away while the next fades into focus. These are just some examples but there are plenty of other transitions that can make the video more exciting and interesting to watch rather than it just being boring.

When editing the shots can also be made to change in time with the music. For example, the shot could change every time there is a heavy drum beat for just one section of the song. This would show that the editing moves with the music and the video is clearly linked with the song. This keeps the audience engaged too.nother technique that can be used when editing music videos is the transitions that are used.
