“The Big Bopper” – JP Richardson (1930-1959)

He was a singer song writer, whose big voice made him a rock and roll artist. The most famous hit he did was ‘Chantilly Lace’ (above). He also played the guitar. People loved him because he had drive and ambition at a young age and chose to follow his dreams rather than play the rather young boy attitude. This dream meant that JP had to quit college and start full time at a radio station in Texas.

His nickname came about when he was watching college students do a dance called the Bop. After brainstorming the idea he decided to us the name ‘The Big Bopper’. After working so hard with the radio station, KTRM, he was made the station’s program director. During this experience, he broke the record of continuous air broadcast by eight minutes.

Richardson has been given credit for coining the term music video, as he was the first to set an example in 1959. This same year Richardson died, in a plane crash. People called the day of his death ‘The Day the Music Died’...
