Eujanie's Evaluation

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Our media product is very post-modern and this can be seen because it doesn't really match up to any of the lyrics in the song and the character in the video is in her own little dream world. It matches the song in a sense that it is about being in a dream world for owl city and so we re-created this but with our own little twist about teenagers needing to get away and forget about the norm and be with themselves to free their mind.

Our product can also be compared with others because of the setting used and the relevance that it has to the song. The setting we used is similar to that of the one used in kasabian's video for Vlad The Impaler. A field/Park area is what is used.

Our product has lip syncing involved which is just like music videos that we see today and we also varied the camera shots we used and editing techniques to make it look more modern and professional.

How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?
The Main product and ancillary texts are very effective together as a group because they all link together. The digi-pack that we created has a city image running through it and this relates to the artist which is Owl City.

The website uses blues which relate to the blue on the digi-pack but it also is kind of colourful which relates to the dreaminess of the music video. As a whole the ancillary texts promote the single and make it more likely to be noticed by the target audience.

What have you learned from your audience feedback?
Our Product showed the story of a teenager in a dreamland, wanting to get away from the hustle and bustle of school life. Our audience feedback showed that we portrayed this well and that it was easy to understand that this is the point we were trying to make.
Among the positive feedback people said that the feel of the product was appropriate to the song that we used because it was a dreamy and calm song. From our feedback we learnt how to improve the product. This included adding more shots and on the green screen areas, the audience would have preferred that we used a moving background rather than a still image. Also, that we used something more surreal so that it matched the dreamy feel of the video and the song.
The demographic research we carried out helped us to use the right people to act in our video because this would be appropriate for right age.
How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

Adobe Premiere Pro Logo
When we had filmed all of the shots that we needed, we used a programme called Adobe Premiere Pro to edit the footage and complete the construction of the product.

Sometimes this proved difficult because the lip syncing was hard to get in time with the music. When adding the green screen shots we used Adobe After Effects to add a background image and then we imported that into Premiere.

Once everything was edited together we could export it.

When we were doing the research we filmed people answering questions that helped us to know what kind of music video they would like to see and what kind of music they would like to hear. We used this to make a music video that we knew would be watched by our chosen target audience and get a good response.

When we were planning the product we had to make sure that we had a sturdy idea and that we planned it out so that we knew what shots were going where and when. For this we used a programme called Celtx. This programme enabled us to make a storyboard and add images and also plan the actor/s that we were going to use.
For the evaluation stage of our media product we filmed the response of people watching our music video and then interviewed them with questions that provided sufficient feedback as to what they liked and didn't like and how it could be improved.

When we were making the Radio Spot for the new single we used a programme called Garage Band.

We used iWeb to create the website for our media product. We had to include news of owl city and also a small biography.
